: Probably a lot of new music artists aspire to have a hit song. But for those who aspire to create a body of good work, a hit song could be their worst nightmare. It will bring them fame, but also an audience that will not look any further than that big hit song. That one song might haunt the artist for the rest of his or her music career, leaving them unable to open anyone's ears to anything else. Was that Del Shannon's undoing?
: Better to have a solid body of work with a large devoted audience and no hit songs.
Amen to that. :^)
I hope never to have a "smash hit" (that sounds violent and painful, anyway). No, I'd much rather have a cult following than a top ten single. If any song of mine does achieve major success, I hope it's representative of my other work -- one son or daughter giving the world an accurate impression of what the whole family is like.
