Deserving The Tools
Woohoo! My Yamaha P80 arrived by FedEx this past Saturday. A real grand piano it's not, but it's just about the best approximation I've found, and lightweight and relatively cheap to boot. After years of hauling around an Alesis QS8, I almost giggle every time I load the P80 into my car all by myself (I had to wait for strong men to take pity on me to get the other one anywhere). Once the mixer and PA speakers get here, I'll be a fully mobile piano player at last.
It's a fine line between gear lust and love, I've found. While getting my crash course in hammer-action keyboards, active vs. passive speakers, mic preamps and so forth, I discovered a hint of that tugging that sends people off to the store to buy the latest thing, not because they have any use for it, but just because it's so cool. I can see how the boundary gets easily blurred -- anything can be said to be a potential door-opener to infinite new possibilities, or a step closer to the Perfect Sound (a noble quest, of course, regardless of expense). I guess the trick lies in knowing what you deserve. I've been trying to find tools that roughly match my level of artistry: what I need now and for the next few levels of growth, and none of the finer details that I can't really appreciate yet. I'll save those for a time when I have more of a clue about this whole music thing. *grin*
