: Someone please tell me the story of Daughter? Anyone's interpretation will be fine.
I was sitting on the back patio with my father one late spring afternoon, drinking ice water and talking about the garden. We've always been both close and at odds with one another, but particularly at that point -- I was trying to get out from under his stamp of approval for everything, without shutting him out completely. It was the classic parent-adolescent conflict, except I was already 20 by that time, so I was blessed and cursed with being able to see his point of view.
As I wrote the lyrics I became increasingly unsure of whose voice was speaking: mine or my father's. It seemed appropriate somehow, though, so I didn't try to fix it. On impulse I gave it the working title "Daughter" and meant to change it later (to "Edge of Summer," maybe?), but it steadfastly refused.
So that's my story. I should add that while it is the original story, it's by no means the "definitive" one. Between has been about a breakup and sexual insecurities and an illness and the birth of a child and the conflict of art versus practicality...songs take on lives of their own when they leave my head, and there is no single truth to any of them, which is a wonderful thing. Anyone else have a story about what Daughter means?
