27 October 2000 I wrote the first few of these when we were putting the site together, and haven't touched this page since. Time to talk again. I start voice lessons next Wednesday -- very exciting. For a long while I clung to the notion of being a self-taught singer; I liked the ego boost I got every time someone couldn't believe I'd never studied voice officially. And of course there are the Fiona Apples and Glen Phillipses of the world, who sing what they write beautifully without ever being taught how to breathe. But I'm not that type, for better or worse. I have a habit of writing songs beyond my ability to perform, which is why some of the stuff I've written won't be going on the album, and why some of what is still gets a grimace out of me now and then. But it's all part of growing, I guess. I look forward to what I'll be able to sing a year or two down the road. - VT
